The packaging market is growing. This is confirmed by results of the study “Global Packaging Trends 2017” recently published by Euromonitor International and the most important international industrial associations APPMA, PPMA, PMMI und UCIMA.
According to this study, the global packaging market has grown by 1.9% in 2016 and, hence, by 3.4 billion units. The packaging industry has generated most sales with flexible plastics, PET and glass bottles. Taken together these three packaging types accounted for more than half the market in 2016.

FOCUS ON THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION
The study has identified the highest increase in packaging in the emerging markets with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region – led by India, China and Indonesia. In the Middle East the rising consumption of packaging was caused by a growing class of young people and a higher consumption of soft drinks especially in Saudi Arabia.

500 ml PET bottles still are the most common packaging size for water. But smaller packaging units are becoming increasingly popular – for instance, 330 ml bottles for children featuring original animal motifs. Photo: Lanjarón
In line with the global health trend bottled water is expected to rise markedly in volume until 2020. The most popular packaging unit worldwide here is the 500-millilitre PET bottle. However, smaller packaging units are also becoming increasingly popular; this is especially the case with children’s 330 ml packs with childlike motifs.
